The American Film Market, held annually in Santa Monica, is produced by IFTA. The event brings together those companies who control films rights (sellers) and those who need films to distribute through theaters and other media in their home countries (buyers). It is the pivotal destination for film financing, licensing and production negotiations. The AFM is the only event of its type held in the United States. It is attended by 8000 people from 75 countries and includes 900 screenings, five days of seminars, and non-stop deal-making.

When you talk about independent film, there is more than meets the eye.

Did you know that Million Dollar Baby, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and Wedding Crashers are independent films? That Sideways was a major studio film? That more than half of the “Best Picture” Academy Award winners since 1980 were produced and distributed by IFTA members?

What's the difference? These films were financed individually from many sources, including advance commitments by national distributors around the world. Each reflects the creativity and risk-taking that is the hallmark of the global independent industry.
